Mary Cole was an educator who believed that education is one of life’s greatest gifts. She valued the exceptional instruction and opportunities Durham Academy provided and understood that investing in young people could create opportunities and lasting impact for generations to come.

Mary’s son Anderson was a gifted student and proud member of Durham Academy’s Class of 1980. He had a boundless curiosity and a desire to make the world better through innovation. When Anderson tragically passed away during his sophomore year, Mary established the James Anderson Cole, III ’80 Endowment Fund and Award in his memory—creating a way for his spirit of discovery and love of learning to live on at Durham Academy.

Years later Mary took an important step to ensure that this legacy would endure. Through a planned estate gift, she strengthened the endowment and provided for its continued impact long into the future. Her thoughtful planning reflected her deep belief that a gift to Durham Academy could create opportunities for students for generations to come. Her planned gift will help sustain the educational opportunities she cherished while honoring Anderson’s remarkable spirit and ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future Cavaliers.

The Cole family is deeply proud and honored by Mary’s commitment to Durham Academy and grateful for the foresight and generosity reflected in her estate planning. Her legacy is a testament to the enduring power of philanthropy: one thoughtful decision can open doors, shape lives, and strengthen a community for generations.
